Introduction

Over the past decade, the in-home television entertainment industry has experienced massive upheaval. The concept of ‘cord-cutting’ has become mainstream across the United States as consumers opt out of cable television packages en masse. This substantial industry disruption is caused and enabled by the spread of highly successful apps such as Netflix and Hulu. These apps make use of high speed internet connections to provide high definition streaming of shows and movies. They are easily accessible via internet-connected computer, but not all televisions have the hardware to run such programs.

This gap in television capability has created a market for ‘streaming sticks:’ internet connected devices which connect to an HDMI port on a television and allow the user to freely stream from all their favorite apps. Examples include the Google Chromecast, Amazon FireTV stick, and the Roku Streaming Stick.

This analysis will focus on the complete user experience for the Roku Streaming Stick. It will cover initial setup, configuration, and everyday use.
