Human Use Analysis: Simmons Hall Laundry

User Needs

Interviews of users indicated that residents had several basic needs. They wanted to be able to easily access the laundry rooms, to know if laundry machines were available before going to the laundry room, to transport their laundry to the laundry rooms easily, and to quickly understand how to properly use the machines.

Users had some different needs depending on how often they did laundry and their preferred methods of doing laundry. One user does laundry every week and separates whites and darks, so she requires both washers in a laundry room to be available simultaneously. Another user does laundry every 3-4 weeks and washes everything together on the cold setting, so he typically requires one washer but occasionally needs both if all his clothing won't fit in a single washer. All users interviewed mentioned that it is often difficult to transport their laundry to the laundry rooms in the building, especially if the closest laundry rooms are unavailable or if they see online that a room is available when it actually is not. At that point, they have to look up the online listing again and take their laundry from one laundry room to another, which is annoying and time-consuming.
