May 24, 2002: If you're done with 6.033, and want to learn more about systems, take a look at some more systems related classes.

May 24, 2002: Final grades will be available on WebSIS. Quiz 3 and other leftover assignments (like DP2) are available for pick up from Neena in NE43-523.

May 15, 2002: The slides from Tuesday's lecture on software engineering are available here.

May 6, 2002: An update to the class notes was handed out in lecture Wednesday, May 1, 2002. If you missed the handout, you can pick up a copy in NE43-523, or by printing out this PDF file. (The previous post about the update linked to an incorrect file.)

May 2, 2002: In recitation on Tuesday, May 14 (after DP2 is due) you will be giving a 5-minute presentation discussing your design project. We've posted a guide to help you prepare.

Apr 29, 2002: Hands-on 9 has been posted.

Apr 23, 2002: Therac Revisited. Here are two readings related to the Therac reading from early this term: Multidata and Theratron. These are not required, but they are relevant to our current course work.

Apr 23, 2002: Quiz 2 and its solutions have been released.

Apr 22, 2002: We've chosen two excellent papers for DP1.

Apr 19, 2002: Assignment 6 has been posted.

Apr 18, 2002: Design Project 2 has been posted.

Apr 18, 2002: The slides from the Quiz 2 Review have been posted. You can find them on the handouts page.

Apr 18, 2002: There have been a couple of important updates made to the course notes in the last few days. They can be found on the errata page.

Apr 10, 2002: We have posted the newer 1994 version of Anderson's Why Cryptosystems Fail. This new version contains most of the same information as the 1993 version, but may be easier to read. If you have not gotten to the paper yet, please read the 1994 version. If you have already read the 1993 version (which is in the reading packet and was previously linked to by the web page), you don't need to read the newer version.

Mar 16, 2002: The slides from the DP1 Writing Lecture are online.

Mar 15, 2002: Assignment 4 has been posted.

Mar 15, 2002: As pointed out by several students, the definition of the word "batching" that is given in chapter 2 of the class notes is inconsistent with the definition that was used in preparing answer B to quiz question 2. As a result, a decision whether or not to circle answer 2B does not measure understanding of the material. If you lost points because you did not circle 2B, please show your paper to your teaching assistant to have the proper credit restored. The solutions now have an updated explanation.

Mar 13, 2002: Some students may have questions about Design Project 1. Since other students may have the same questions, we have created a news page for DP1 that lists common questions and answers.

Mar 11, 2002: The solutions to Quiz 1 have been released along with statistics about the test scores.

Mar 7, 2002: Recitation #15 which was being held in 5-134 will be moved to room 36-155 for the remainder of the semester.

Mar 6, 2002: Design Project #1 has been released. It is due Thursday, March 21.

Marc 6, 2002: Slides from the review session have been posted here.

Mar 5, 2002: There will be a quiz review session Wednesday March 6th from 7-9pm in 34-101. The review session will cover the course notes and papers for the first 75 minutes. The remaining time will be used to answer student questions.

Feb 28, 2002: A new question has been inserted as 2b in the fourth hands-on assignment.

Feb 28, 2002: The time for the third quiz has been announced. It will be held during Finals Week on Thursday from 1:30pm to 4:30pm in Johnson.

Feb 26, 2002: The reading assignment for Thursday has been reduced a bit. Instead of reading Sections 1 through 5, 6.3 and 6.4, we're only requiring that you read Sections 1 through 5. Furthermore, there are several references to networking in the paper. Don't worry if you don't understand these references; we'll cover networking in class next week.

Feb 6, 2002: The student section list has been posted. (You will need an MIT Personal Certificate to access this list)

Feb 6, 2002: We have been told that the second (and larger) installment of the class notes will be available at the Instrument Room, 38-501, starting at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 7. If you have already picked up the first installment, be sure to bring the coupon on the first page of that installment, to exchange for the second installment.

Feb 6, 2002: Two of our students have reported that the correct Mythical Man Month ISBN is: 0-201-83595-9 (we accidentally listed the ISBN of an older edition), and that it is available from bookpool.com for $23.95.

Feb 5, 2002: The Mythical Man-Month is not in stock at Quantum Books right now, but we won't need them until the end of the term. We'll post when they become available. Alternately, you could buy a copy early from somewhere else like Amazon.

Feb 4, 2002: Assignment 1 has been posted.

Feb 4, 2002: Instructions for picking up the course notes have been posted.

The Web pages are under construction.

Important: 6.033 will hit the ground running on Tuesday, Feb. 5 (the first day of classes) by holding recitation section meetings that are not just organizational and administrative -- they will have real content as well.

Attend the recitation section assigned by the registrar. During the first lecture, we will handout recitation sign up forms. On the form, try to pick a section with an instructor you have not had before. We will balance the sections after the first week or so.

Lab: There is no lab component of 6.033 this year. If you are interested in a systems lab, take Distributed Operating System Engineering (6.824) in the fall.

6.004 is a strict prereq for 6.033. See the FAQ for frequently asked questions about 6.033.
