A sample-based synthesizer uses prerecorded sounds to generate musical tones. Audio "samples" are recored into the device and the synthesizer "resamples" them to alter the pitch of the sound to the desired note. For example, the recorded input can be a sawtooth wave and the output of the sampler is a pitch-shifted version.
