Assignments
Assigned Due Description
6/23/07 6/25/07 Read MIT 2.007 Design Notes
6/23/07 6/25/07

Break your robot down into modules and write each down. You will have to engineer each of these modules, so it is important to break the robot into manageable chunks. Identify the most critical module.

6/23/07 6/25/07
Read through class website and check out some of the links.
6/25/07 6/26/07 Read up through "The Silver Bullet" in Skunk Works. Think about how important proper scheduling and mitigation planning was to this project.
6/25/07 6/26/07 Do the winch power conservation and gear ratio assignment.
6/26/07 6/27/07 Do the paddle wheel integration problem that has been posted. Feel free to work in groups on this assignment, but be prepared to talk about how it is solved individually. Think about how the pressure creates a torque on the paddle. I will be in the classroom tonight if people want help.
6/26/07 6/27/07 Read "Swatting at Mosquitoes " in Skunk Works.
6/26/07 6/27/07 Read the thruster assembly section of the sea perch manual.
6/26/07 6/27/07 Read the supplemental document on motor building.
6/27/07 6/28/07 Come up with a design for a dynamometer made from LEGOs to measure the mechanical power output and electrical power input of your motors. Check out the dyno handout posted to learn more about what a dyno does. After you test your motor you will have to make Torque vs. Speed, Power (both mechanical and electrical) vs. Speed, Efficiency vs. Speed, and Electrical Current vs. Speed graphs. Think about what quantities you need to measure from the motor, and how you could make a device to do so out of LEGOs. I will provide you with a multimeter that can measure both electrical voltage and current.
6/27/07 6/28/07 Do Justin's homework problem given in class
6/27/07 6/29/07 Come up with at least 5 questions to bring to Fenway to ask the engineer who will be giving a tour. You could ask about the history of the park, different building techniques they have used, how the players influence physical aspects of the park, etc.
6/27/07 6/30/07 Finish building your motors
6/30/07 7/2/07 Finish testing your dynos and plotting the data collected. Remeber units!
6/30/07 7/2/07 Read "How we skunks got our name" in Skunk Works
7/4/07 7/5/07 Compare your measured material values with values on MatWeb.
7/4/07 7/5/07 Finish your frame and grabber concepts to bring to the pool.
7/5/07 7/6/07 Read the supplemental document on camera building.
7/5/07 7/6/07 Make sure you have read up through "Overflying Russia" in Skunk Works.
7/12/07 7/16/07 Do your writing workshop tonight because we may get back late on Friday.
7/12/07 7/16/07 Finish your control box
7/12/07 7/16/07 Read up through "Getting off the Ground " in Skunk Works.
7/18/07 7/23/07 Finish your robot and get practice driving. The competition will be on 7/24/07.
7/18/07 7/23/07 Read up through "The Ship That Never Was" in Skunk Works.
