Summary of installation steps Steps for installing $SumMIT with Oracle on Windows XP pro or 2000 pro:
Step A -

Download/install/test Oracle software

  • Is Oracle already installed?
  • Is Oracle software installed on your workstation?

    To find out,

    1. Open your Control Panels folder, using Windows Explorer,
    2. Open Add/Remove Programs,
    3. Look for MIT Oracle Client Software in list of currently installed programs.

Note: Oracle is also needed for running COEUS, BrioQuery, and other applications.

  • If Oracle is not installed, download and install it

Steps 1 -3 below require you to have or obtain a personal certificate in order to download Oracle.

To download Oracle by means of an MIT personal certificate,

  1. Go to MIT Software Distribution and download the Oracle installer to a temporary folder.

Note: This page includes a link for obtaining a personal certificate.

  2. Double click on the downloaded installer file and respond to prompts, using the instructions provided by IS.

Notes: Selecting the default destination directory is recommended.

  3. (12/17/02) If the installer asks if you are on the MIT network, you should say No.

Note: The ftp server used by the installer has been eliminated, so that selecting Yes may cause an error.

If you need help with this step, contact the Business Liaison Team at (617) 252-1177 or business-help@mit.edu

  • Add names entry for "mitotg"

You do NOT need to perform this step if you downloaded Oracle after 3/1/99.

To update your Windows computer with the latest Oracle names file, go to the MIT Software Distribution for Windows web page; then download and install the TNSNames Updater.

  • Test Oracle installation

You do NOT need to perform this step, unless SumMIT does not work in Step C.

To test the Oracle installation,

  1. From Programs menu, select Oracle, then from its submenu, select Sql plus
    Result: A logon window opens.

  2. Enter your SumMIT userid and password; in Host String box, enter "mitotg".
Note: To get an Oracle userid for SumMIT, contact Diane Monahan at 3-6730 or dianem@mit.edu

  3. Does an "SQL>" prompt display (after a few seconds)?

If yes, then Oracle is successfully installed.
If no, contact the Business Liaison Team at (617) 252-1177 or business-help@mit.edu

  4. Type "exit" after the SQL> prompt to exit, then File < Close.
Step B -

Download/install $SumMIT

To download SumMIT,
  1. Click here to download the appropriate $SumMIT installer to your workstation:
Note: You should put it in a temporary directory on your C:/ drive.

  2. To install SumMIT,
    • go to your temporary directory, and double click on the file "SumMIT-Win-Installer.exe",
    • follow the instructions on the screen for a "typical" installation (which takes only a few seconds).

    (7/11/2003) You have just installed $SumMIT v4.60a (including E-Time v5.00a).

Step C-

Run $SumMIT to see if it works

To run SumMIT,
  1. You can run SumMIT from the Start menu (under Programs), or using Windows Explorer, by double clicking on the file "Summit.lbr" in your SumMIT folder.
Result: Omnis should start up and present $SumMIT logon window.

  2. Enter your SumMIT-with-Oracle userid and password.
Note: To get a SumMIT userid, contact Diane Monahan at 3-6730 or dianem@mit.edu

  3. Can you get to the SumMIT main menu?
    • If yes, then installation was successful.
    • If no, click here for online help

If you need help, contact Diane Monahan, 3-6730 or dianem@mit.edu

  4. If $SumMIT works, you may want to make shortcuts to the LBR files you regularly use (to save startup time).
For example, "SumTime.lbr" runs ETime (timesheets and vouchers) and "ESandi.lbr" runs ESandi.
Step D -

Delete unneeded files

You can now delete these files:
  • the files downloaded to your temporary directory (Oracle installer file, SumMIT-Win-installer.exe)
  • your old SumMIT folder, if not overwritten.
