I am currently an assistant professor in the Department of Urban Studies
and Planning at MIT. I finished my Ph.D. at the University of California
at Berkeley in 1999. My new job is actually a return to MIT, as I completed
my undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering and Political Science
at MIT in 1989. While completing my Ph.D. I lived in Vietnam for about a year, and
still regularly conduct research there. Prior to my Ph.D., I lived in
Thailand and worked for the United Nations there. Before that, I lived
in Seattle and worked for a small non-profit called the Pollution Prevention
Research Center. I have worked recently as a consultant to the United Nations Industrial
Development Organization, the United Nations Development Programme,
the World Bank, and the US Environmental Protection Agency on pollution
prevention, cleaner production, industrial ecology, and sustainable
development issues. I am currently working on a project on monitoring of multinational firms'
environmental and labor practices around the world. I also recently served
as a consultant to a consortium of universitites to research conditions
in the factories which produce their logo garments. You can view my complete resume
