Thursday, Jan. 23, 7 pm [Directions]
Get the picture
Human-rights activists are shown arranging dozens of mock coffins
outside the Mexican Embassy in Washington, DC. The demonstration
marked the anniversary of a massacre in the state of Chiapas in
southern Mexico, where leftist rebels are challenging the official
government.
Panelists
Our discussion will examine
the role that human rights plays in Washington's bilateral relationships
in Latin America and the Caribbean;
and various other foreign-policy issues dealing with human rights, from
"Plan Colombia,"
the forty-year embargo against Cuba, and
US policy in the Middle East to
reproductive rights, women's health, and the Hyde Amendment,
immigration and asylum policy, and
the rights of prisoners taken in combat.
We will also look at how NGOs and activists organize around human rights
and how they work to affect Congressional actions.
There are three other discussions in this series:
January 9, on national security;
January 16, on trade, environment, and globalization; and
January 30, on "Lessons from the Hill," when our guests
will include people who have served in the Congress. You are welcome to join us for all sessions,
but space is limited, so please let us know if you plan
to attend. Your pre-registration helps in our planning and lets us inform you about materials
you might find useful in preparing for the seminars. There is no registration fee.
