The mission of MIT is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century.

We seek to develop in each member of the MIT community the ability and passion to work wisely, creatively, and effectively for the betterment of humankind.

The MIT Excellence Awards acknowledge the extraordinary efforts made by members of our community toward fulfilling the goals, values, and mission of the Institute. This is among the highest honors awarded to staff by MIT. Professionalism, commitment to best practices, and high standards of excellence are at the heart of these awards.

Recipients of the MIT Excellence Awards represent many areas of the Institute and perform all types of jobs. Whether they are working behind the scenes or on the front lines, each serves as an exemplary role model for the entire MIT community. The work they do may be done within their own department or may involve cross-functional teamwork in several departments and/or organizations outside of MIT.

Eligibility
These awards are intended primarily to acknowledge the work of service, support, administrative, and sponsored research staff. They are also for faculty and other academic staff where their work meets the specific guidelines described within the six award categories. These awards are not intended to recognize research or teaching accomplishments. Both teams and individuals are eligible to be nominated for any of the award categories. Subcontractors, consultants, outsourced, and temporary employees are not eligible for the cash award.

Staff and Faculty members who serve on the MIT Excellence Awards Selection Committee are not eligible for a team or individual award during the year they serve.

Reward Amount
Individual recipients receive $2,000; teams receive up to $10,000 ($2,000 maximum per individual). Cash awards are considered additional pay and will have payroll taxes removed before issuance.

The Ceremony
The MIT Excellence Awards are celebrated annually at a ceremony on campus. This year's ceremony was held February 28, 2007. All members of the MIT community are invited to attend this special event. Award recipients are encouraged to invite family and friends, as well. Awards are presented by the President and other MIT Senior Leaders including the Provost, Executive Vice President, Chancellor, and Director of Lincoln Laboratory.
