North African/ Middle Eastern garment (sometimes called farasia in Morocco) consisting of a long, full robe with slit neckline, decorated with embroidery, and long, full, bell-shaped sleeves. worn in US since 1960s as at-home and evening dress by women, and sometimes by men. in Egypt and Near Eastern countries, the caftan is a striped, coat-like garment with long sleeves and worn by men, tied with a sash at the waist. in Russia the caftan is used as a long overcoat.
