flapper dress

style featuring dresses tapered to narrow hemlines. bodices usually had surplice necklines with kimono, raglan, or dropped-shoulder sleeves. skirts were fuller at the hips, sometimes with draperies, peplums, or peg-tops. other skirts were made in tiers. most skirts had a slashed side seam to facilitate walking. accessories included small pouch handbags, spats, and hats with large crowns and small brims. however, the term came to be associated with young women of the 1920s wearing lipstick, makeup, bobbed hair, short skirt (above the knees), who went out on unchaperoned dates. the image was characterized by actress Louise Brooks.
