a running shoe designed for the longer medium distances to the longer distances. flats are designed so as to minimize weight yet provide sufficient shock absorption, and in champion races as little deviation as an ounce in each foot can win or lose a race. Bill Bowerwan, a celebrated coach, would custom make racing flats for each of his runners, making careful measurements of a runner's height, weight, foot shape, arch, etc.
