spikes

a running shoe commonly referred to by its characteristic feature, spikes set into the ball of the sole of the shoe. designed for shorter medium distances and sprints. racing spikes are designed so as to minimize weight without the consideration of shock absorption. racing spikes are so called because the ball of the sole is inset with removable spikes (which are screwed in) that provide grip on gravel and rubber track surfaces. long metal spikes are used for gravel surfaces, and shorter plastic spikes are used for rubber surfaces. the body of the shoe is shaped so that the heel of the foot does not touch the ground.
