LSA.120 | Reconstructions of Old Chinese and Proto-Sino-Tibetan

Hwang-cherng Gong
MW 10:10-11:50
location: 32-144

The reconstructions of the phonological systems of Old Chinese and Proto-Sino-Tibetan involve some controversial issues. This course will critically examine various reconstructions of Old Chinese as proposed by different scholars. The internal evidence of Old Chinese materials will be interpreted in the light of comparative evidence provided by the three classical Tibeto-Burman languages, Written Tibetan, Written Burmese, and Tangut. The sound systems of Old Chinese and Proto-Sino-Tibetan will be reconstructed and the development from Proto-Sino-Tibetan to Proto-Tibeto-Burman and Old Chinese will be presented.
