LSA.212 | Morphology and Lexical Semantics

Rochelle Lieber
MW 10:10-11:50
location: 32-141

In this course we will first review the system of lexical semantic representation argued for in Lieber (2004). We will then revisit a number of problems in morphology and lexical semantics that are familiar ground - the nature of polysemy in person-noun forming affixes and verbforming affixes in English; the relationship between the semantics of overt verb-forming affixes and noun-to-verb conversion; the semantics of negative and prepositional affixes; the semantic range of aspectual affixation in English; the nature of paradigmatic extension. We will then move farther afield to problems in the lexical semantics of word formation that are less well explored, including the semantics of expressive morphology and noun class morphology.

Prerequisites: a basic course in morphology.
