Butler Youth Leaders Community Service,
Technology, and Research Program

B.F. Butler Middle School of Technology, Lowell, Massachusetts

Program Coordinators: Jacqueline Carr and Joan Mularz

Beginning in 1993, the Butler Middle School has involved its 7th and 8th grade students in community service projects that simultaneously engage them in multi-media production activities. Each year from January through April the students break into groups and participate in the community assistance of their choice. Students research and write essays on the issues involved, as well as produce informational videos and websites. In early May, the students present their videos, create poster displays, and are then judged by community members and students culminating in an awards ceremony.

In August 1999, the Butler Youth Leaders Program was the recipient of a $30,000 Massachusetts Department of Education Lighthouse Grant and in November 2000 it was included in the Global Junior Challenge in Rome as one of 89 finalists out of 588 projects from 49 countries.
