Beginning with the June 2005 Summer Institute in the Materials Science of Material Culture [SIMSMC], we intend to provide direct, on-line, international access to the educational materials that we use and distribute to participants in the SIMSMC sessions. We generate these materials for each of the two topical modules presented during any SIMSMC session. Module materials normally include: a module syllabus, an extensive list of bibliographic references to pertinent module literature, the complete texts of laboratory manuals designed for the module, SIMSMC faculty lecture notes (in the form of slides), and selected images that illustrate module subject matter. We are constrained by copyright law from including (a) published literature (e.g., articles or book chapters), and (b) published images that are copyright protected.

We are able to provide on-line access to SIMSMC materials through participation in MIT's Open Courseware Program [OCW]. OCW encourages MIT faculty to contribute the materials they generate in their classroom teaching for direct, international, on-line availability through the OCW Program. Each SIMSMC module develops directly from modules we teach in an MIT undergraduate class, Materials in Human Experience (MIT subject No. 3.094). Including the educational materials for MIT 3.094 in OCW automatically provides direct, on-line access to those materials and to additional materials used in the expanded SIMSMC modules.

We expect to make on-line access available to all SIMSMC modules presented during the June 2002, 2003, and 2004 sessions. The June 2002 module The Power of Metal in the Andean World is currently available on-line.

As modules become available, we will list them (see below). Simply click on the module of interest to access its Home Page and all associated materials.
