We designed the MIT Summer Institute in Materials Science and Material Culture in response to an educational initiative sponsored by the Division of Materials Research of the National Science Foundation. The call for proposals states:

Many members of the materials community are aware of the need to better prepare graduate students for careers in materials-related areas. ... DMR accepts proposals for innovative experiments in education ... . [The Division] is especially interested in novel concepts and approaches that may be particularly useful in materials-related education.

The SIMSMC is funded by this DMR/NSF program. For a period of at least five years after the termination of our grant in support of the SI we will solicit, compile, and evaluate information from SI participants about their post-SI teaching experiences, including:

  • student response to the new materials engineering subjects or modules you have developed;
  • the syllabi, assigned reading, laboratory exercises in these courses;
  • the graduate education programs your students have chosen to enter, and whether participation in any college level materials engineering/material culture classes influenced their choice of graduate career.

We will ask for recommendations from our SI colleagues about how to improve the SI offerings, given the nature of the student populations they and we address.

In short, we expect to be in close contact with our SI colleagues for a considerable period of time to assess the overall outcome of our joint venture.
