Research summary:
Mechanical cues are now well known to affect a variety of biological processes, and have been recently implicated in regulation and expression of genes. My project involves investigating mechanical influences on vascular development and remodeling. In particular, we are looking at the effects of fluid flow (interstitial and shear) and mechanical compression on the growth and function of vascular networks. This project involves generating a more physiologically relevant model, by employing various stromal and endothelial cell co-cultures, with the final aim of mimicking the microvessels of the myocardium.
