- What is DME?
- DME is Discover Mechanical Engineering, one of the Freshman Pre-Orientation Programs available to incoming freshmen at MIT before regular Orientation starts.
- When is DME?
- DME 2003 will run from officially from Monday, August 18th to Saturday, August 23rd. Students should arrive and check in on Sunday, August 19th, in the Welcome Lounge in McCormick Hall.
- What will I do in DME?
- Over 5 days, freshmen will get a thorough introduction to mechanical engineering, including instruction in machining and electronics - skills used by each student to build their own SoccerBot, meet students and faculty in the mechanical engineering department, go on field trips to a local design company and Six Flags amusement park, and at the end of the week, match their SoccerBots against each other in a tournament at the Boston Museum of Science. - Why should I participate in a Freshman Pre-Orientation Program [FPOP]?
- In addition to experiencing the program, freshmen will have a few extra days on campus to get to know MIT, Cambridge, upperclassmen, and each other.
- Why DME?
- DME is for anyone interested in mechanical engineering, whether or not they intend to major in it. It is intended to give all participants a chance to see what mechanical engineers really do, and to have fun!
- Who can participate in DME?
- All incoming freshman [including those attending International Orientation and those in Interphase] can be in DME. No prior experience in mechanical engineering is necessary, just enthusiasm. To apply, fill out the online application form, making sure to answer the extra DME questions at the bottom.
- What do I need to know before starting DME?
- Absolutely nothing! We will teach you all the machining and electrical skills you need to build your SoccerBot.
- How much does DME cost?
- DME is completely free for freshmen, thanks to our sponsors. All meals will be provided.
- How can I get to campus from Logan Airport?
- There will be a free shuttle between Logan and MIT both Monday and Tuesday. Please sign up if you will use the shuttle.
- Where will I stay during DME?
- Students will be housed in their assigned dorm room during DME, and will stay in the same room for regular Orientation. To rank your housing preferences, visit the housing lottery site.
