Professor Fred Moavenzadeh is President of Masdar Institute of Science and Technology as well as Director of MIT's Technology and Development Program (TDP). As Masdar Institute’s President, he is responsible for ensuring the high quality of its education and research.
As director of TDP since 1973, Professor Moavenzadeh has been involved in a variety of interdisciplinary research and capacity building activities throughout Southeast Asia, East Asia, Africa, South American, and the Middle East including assisting in the establishment of the Masdar Instititute from the incepiton of the Masdar Initiative.
Professor Moavenadeh received his master's degree from Cornell University and his PhD from Purdue University.
Dr. Abdulla Khalifa Al-Hefeiti joined Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in September 2011 as the Library Director bringing a proven record of expertise in academic library administration and development.
Prior to assuming his present position, Dr Al-Hefeiti worked with the Libraries Deanship of the UAE University in various higher administrative positions. He obtained his MLIS from North Carolina Central University and PhD from Cairo University. His research interest includes libraries consortium, digital libraries, library-academics collaboration.
Mr. Bader Al Zarei is the Masdar Institute's Communications Manager. He began his career in management and communications in 2001 after graduating with his Higher Diploma in Applied Media Studies from the Higher Colleges of Technology, Dubai Men’s’ College. Mr. Al Zarei brings with him a wealth of experience from his work in many of the UAE’s notable start ups and government enterprises, including Emaar Properties, Government of Sharjah, Dubai World Central and most recently TECOM Investments.
Mr. Sofiane Benna is the Director of the Information & Communications Technology (ICT) department for Masdar Institute. His main role is to develop a comprehensive ICT strategy and to provide ICT infrastructure, information systems and support services for Masdar Institute. Previous positions he has held include IT Manager at Sharjah Museums Department and Head of Networking, Telecom and Operations at the University of Sharjah.”
Ms. Monika Counts joined Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in 2010 as the Director of Student Affairs.
Previous positions she has held include Head of Student and Academic Affairs and Development, Emirates College for Advanced Education in Abu Dhabi where she was responsible for all aspects of student and academic services; Dean of Educational Development at HCT Abu Dhabi Women’s College; Academic Dean at the American University of Baku; and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington. In addition to her administrative posts, Ms. Counts also held the position of Assistant Professor of English at universities in Morocco and the United States.
Dr. Lamya Nawaf Fawwaz is the Executive Director of Public Affairs at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. Dr. Fawwaz was appointed to Masdar Institute in May 2009.
Prior to taking up her position at Masdar Institute, Dr. Fawwaz was Director of Operations and Strategy at the Sharjah American International School (SAIS) at both the Sharjah and Dubai campuses. Dr. Fawwaz has been on the board of the SAIS for five years, providing executive supervision and developing the strategy plan for the institution. She is also a member of the GW Alumni Association, and a member of Alpha Iota Mu, the International Honor Society for Information Systems.
Dr. Fawwaz has a PhD in Higher Education Administration from George Washington University and a MsC in Information System Technology.
Dr. Steven Griffiths is the Executive Director of Institute Initiatives and Professor of Practice, Chemical Engineering at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. Dr. Griffiths has responsibility for developing strategic relationships with industry, government, and academia and oversees the Institute’s Office of Sponsored Programs, Technology Transfer Office, and Research Centers of Excellence. His overarching role is to establish and nurture external research collaborations with an emphasis on accelerating the development of a knowledge-based economy in Abu Dhabi and bringing sustainable technologies to market.
Mr. Hamza Kazim joined Masdar Institute of Science and Technology as the Director of Operations and Facilities in January 2008 and is currently Vice President forBusiness Operations/Finance. His main role is to develop and maintain a comprehensive operations strategy and provide administrative advice and support to business units and line managers along with managing the facilities of the institute. In addition, he is liaising with the Property Development Unit at Masdar to ensure the timely handover of the new campus in Masdar City. Prior to joining Masdar Institute, Mr. Kazim was a Senior Business Performance Analyst at Dubai Aluminum “DUBAL” for four years.
Mr. Kazim earned a master's of Commerce in Accounting and Finance from Macquarie University, Australia and a bachelor's in Accounting from UAE University.
Professor Scott Kennedy is the Associate Dean for Research for the Masdar Institute and Associate Professor, Water and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Kennedy's current research interests focus on integrating renewable energy sources into power networks, with an emphasis on the interactions between power markets and power system operations. Professor Marwan Khraisheh is the Dean of Engineering for the Masdar Institute. Prior to joining the MIST faculty, he was the Secat - J. Morris Professor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Kentucky.
Professor Khraisheh is a recipient of a number of significant awards including the prestigious US National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the 2004 Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Eugene Merchant Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, the 2003 North American Manufacturing Research Institute (NAMRI) Outstanding Paper Award and the 2005 Henry Mason Lutes Award for Excellence in Engineering Education. He serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Materials Processing Technology (Elsevier) and is a member of a number of international technical committees from ASME, ASM and TMS. Mr. Saleem Rayyan is Director of Business Services and Procurement for Masdar Institute. Prior to joining the Institute, he was the Director of Business Services and Purchasing at University of Sharjah. At Masdar Institute, his department provides business services and support to the different units of the Institute. He also supervises the various procurement related activities including Logistics, Stores, Fixed Assets, Contracts, Supplier Evaluation, Business Travel and Events. He has established this department at the Masdar Institute and is working to ensure the optimal utilization of the Institute’s resources by effective cash and working capital management, capital expenditure evaluation and cost control. Mr. Rayyan holds an EMBA degree and has more than 15 years of experience out of which more than 10 years are specifically related to managing procurement in the educational sector.
Professor Youssef Shatilla is the Associate Dean, Graduate Education. Prior to joining the Masdar Institute faculty, Dr. Shatilla's academic appointments included: Visiting Professor in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT, Associate Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, and Assistant Professor, Department of Nuclear Engineering, Alexandria University.
