In both House Beautiful and the AIA Bulletin, plantings and landscape alternations are heavily promoted for helping to further control natural forces. One of the commonly referred to results in both publications is the sunpocket; an outdoor space which is protected from wind and thus remains more comfortable for a longer period of the year. Landscape features could also be used to mitigate sun and wind when views on undesirable walls (i.e. a western-facing wall) require a large window.
