Project: Net Power
Company/Alliance: NET Power (Owned by Exelon Generation, CB&I, and 8 Rivers Capital)
Location: La Porte, Texas, USA
Feedstock: Natural Gas
Pilot Size: 50MW
Pilot Start Date: 2017
Project Scale-Up: 295MW Project TBD
Capture Technology: Oxy Fuel
CO2 Fate: Potential EOR
Motivation/Economics:
$140 million project cost. It is funded by a combination of cash and in-kind contributions from Exelon and CB&I.
Comments:
The plant will demonstrate NET Power's Allam Cycle technology, which combines oxy-fuel combustion with a supercritical CO2 turbine to create power generation which is promoted by NET Power to produce power at better efficiencies than natural gas combined cycle plants without carbon capture. The demonstration plant will generate power that will be fed to the grid. The NET Power plant also generates pipeline-quality pressurized CO2 as a free output. NET Power has yet to specify where the produced CO2 will go, however it has mentioned that the CO2 could be used for either sequestration or EOR.
Commissioning of the 50MW plant is expected to begin in late 2016 and be completed in 2017. The plant will also provide the validation for a larger 295MW power plant.
