Honors and awards

Stephen Ansolabehere, Professor of Political Science, and James Snyder, Arthur and Ruth Sloan Professor of Political Science and Economics, received the Heinz Eulau award for the best paper in the American Political Science Review in 2002 for their article,"Equal Votes, Equal Money: Court-Ordered Redistricting and the Distribution of Public Expenditures in the American States."

Pentti Kouri Career Development Associate Professor of Economics David Autor has received a National Science Foundation Faculty Career Development Award. He has also been selected as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow for 2003–2004.

Professor of Music Peter Child and Ann F. Friedlaender Professor of Humanities Isabelle de Courtivron were appointed Margaret MacVicar Faculty Fellows.

Institute Professor Emeritus and Professor of Linguistics Noam Chomsky has been elected a Foreign Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada Ford Career Development.

Professor of Economics Dora Costa received the Investigator Award in Health Policy from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Professor Costa has also been awarded a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral and Social Sciences for 2003–2004.

Institute Professor of Economics Peter Diamond has been named the winner of the James R. Killian Jr. Faculty Achievement Award for 2003–2004.

Junot Díaz, Associate Professor of Writing, has been awarded a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University for 2003–2004.

Joseph Dumit, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Science and Technology Studies, has been selected as the 2003 recipient of the $25,000 Levitan Prize in the Humanities for his proposal "Mental Illness Movements: Facts and Experience in the Information Age."

Ford International Professor Emeritus of Economics Richard Eckaus has been elected to the National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT) of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Professor of Economics Glenn D. Ellison was selected as a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study for 2003–2004. He was also the recipient of the MIT Graduate Economic Association Teaching Award for 2002–2003.

Senior Lecturer in Economics Sara Fisher Ellison received a Fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Study for 2003–2004. She was also the recipient of the MIT Undergraduate Economic Association Teaching Award.

Deborah Fitzgerald, Professor of the History of Technology, is president-elect of the Agricultural History Society.

Professor of the History of Science Loren Graham received the Stuart D. and Venice Gross Award for Excellence in Literature, given by Saginaw Valley University, for his book A Face in the Rock: The Tale of Grand Island Chippewa.

Noel Jackson, Assistant Professor of Literature, has been awarded a Michael J. Connell Research Fellowship from the Huntington Library.

Paul L. Joskow, Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics and Management, has been named President of the International Society for New Institutional Economics.

Professor of Science Writing Robert Kanigel received the MIT Class of 1960 Innovation in Education Award.

Professor of Industrial Relations and Political Science Richard M. Locke won an Excellence in Teaching Award from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Stephen Meyer, Professor of Political Science, received a National Science Foundation Research Award.

Associate Professor of Political Science Melissa Nobles has been elected president of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS). She has also been awarded a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University for the 2003–2004 academic year.

Mitsui Professor of Economics James M. Poterba was named Distinguished Scholar of the American Council on Capital Formation for 2002.

Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Charles Stewart III's Committees and the U.S. Congress, 1789–1946, a four volume work co-compiled and co-edited with David T. Cannon and Garrison Nelson, has been named a Best Reference Source 2002 by Library Journal.

Professor and Associate Director of Comparative Media Studies William Uricchio has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Jing Wang, S.C. Fang Professor of Chinese Language and Culture, received a Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies.

Assistant Professor of Economics Muhamet Yildiz received a Cowles Foundation Fellowship for 2003–2004.
