Zhao Jing is extremely versatile and besides her excellent technical talent, she also has strong leadership qualities, effective communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. Her team in Singapore is the regional champion of Philips Semiconductor in Quality Improvement Conversion. She has also represented Philips Singapore at the Philips worldwide competition at Kunmin, China, in 2003.

Zhao Jing thinks that the X-factor in winning these awards can be attributed to her learning experience at SMA. “SMA gave me not only the solid knowledge base and skills I needed to succeed, but also enlarged my mindset, which is something I will enjoy during my entire life. SMA has great programmes where you get the research facilities and technical support in Singapore and MIT simultaneously. SMA is also the place where you receive stimulation to develop ideas due to the challenging environment of MIT and other top universities in the U.S.”

She still remembers that she was initially intimidated by the contents of the syllabus. “I was hesitant about the first class assignment from MIT as I was required to provide my own links between the assignment and the materials covered in lectures.

Gradually, I started to realise that the amazing purpose of education in MIT is that you have to create your own methods to set up the models and concepts for your projects, rather than follow other people’s ideas.”

“Looking back at my time at SMA, I realise that my three years of working experience in SSMC and studying experience in SMA have made me an extremely down-to-earth person. I am grateful to my advisor, Associate Professor Lu Li because without his recommendation I would never have had any chance to become a student of the challenging and enriching AMM&NS programme. I would also like to thank my advisor at MIT, Professor Carl Thompson for his support in all my experiments at MIT. I do think that the SMA programme is a really effective and innovative engineering education and research collaboration.”
