A project focused on designing stable and conductive polymers for Lithium batteries, led by Professors Yang Shao-Horn and Jeffery Grossman, will receive $10M in research funding from the Toyota Research Institute (TRI).

Scientists and producers usually face a problem to elaborate batteries of new types: lighter but at the same time more powerful and with higher energy storage capacity. One of the possible ways to do that is to replace modern lithium-ion batteries by so called lithium-air batteries. Such batteries would be able to accumulate five times more power than usual lithium-ion ones. One area, where they could make revolution, is electric cars, which now use lithium-ion batteries."- EurekAlert.

Abstract:

Owing to their high power density and superior cyclability relative to batteries, electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) have emerged as an important electrical energy storage technology that will play a critical role in the large-scale deployment of intermittent renewable energy sources, smart power grids, and electrical vehicles. Because the capacitance and charge–discharge rates of EDLCs scale with surface area and electrical conductivity, respectively, porous carbons such as activated carbon, carbon nanotubes and crosslinked or holey graphenes are used exclusively as the active electrode materials in EDLCs. One class of materials whose surface area far exceeds that of activated carbons, potentially allowing them to challenge the dominance of carbon electrodes in EDLCs, is metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The high porosity of MOFs, however, is conventionally coupled to very poor electrical conductivity, which has thus far prevented the use of these materials as active electrodes in EDLCs. Here, we show that Ni3(2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene)2 (Ni3(HITP)2), a MOF with high electrical conductivity11, can serve as the sole electrode material in an EDLC. This is the first example of a supercapacitor made entirely from neat MOFs as active materials, without conductive additives or other binders. The MOF-based device shows an areal capacitance that exceeds those of most carbon-based materials and capacity retention greater than 90% over 10,000 cycles, in line with commercial devices. Given the established structural and compositional tunability of MOFs, these results herald the advent of a new generation of supercapacitors whose active electrode materials can be tuned rationally, at the molecular level. Abstract:

Understanding the interaction between water and oxides is critical for many technological applications, including energy storage, surface wetting/self-cleaning, photocatalysis and sensors. Here, we report observations of strong structural oscillations of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF) in the presence of both H2O vapour and electron irradiation using environmental transmission electron microscopy. These oscillations are related to the formation and collapse of gaseous bubbles. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy provides direct evidence of O2 formation in these bubbles due to the incorporation of H2O into BSCF. SrCoO3−δ was found to exhibit small oscillations, while none were observed for La0.5Sr0.5CoO3−δ and LaCoO3. The structural oscillations of BSCF can be attributed to the fact that its oxygen 2p-band centre is close to the Fermi level, which leads to a low energy penalty for oxygen vacancy formation, high ion mobility, and high water uptake. This work provides surprising insights into the interaction between water and oxides under electron-beam irradiation. Continue reading.

Abstract:

Understanding and controlling the kinetics of O2 reduction in the presence of Li+-containing aprotic solvents, to either Li+-O2- by one-electron reduction or Li2O2 by two-electron reduction, is instrumental to enhance the discharge voltage and capacity of aprotic Li-O2 batteries. Standard potentials of O2/Li+-O2- and O2/O2- were experimentally measured and computed using a mixed cluster-continuum model of ion solvation. Increasing combined solvation of Li+ and O2- was found to lower the coupling of Li+-O2- and the difference between O2/Li+-O2- and O2/O2- potentials. The solvation energy of Li+ trended with donor number (DN), and varied greater than that of O2- ions, which correlated with acceptor number (AN), explaining a previously reported correlation between Li+-O2- solubility and DN. These results highlight the importance of the interplay between ion–solvent and ion–ion interactions for manipulating the energetics of intermediate species produced in aprotic metal–oxygen batteries. Abstract:

In this Account, we briefly review the working principles and current status of AP-XPS. We use several recent in situ studies on model electrochemical components as well as operando studies performed by our groups at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to illustrate that AP-XPS is both a chemically and an electrically specific tool since photoelectrons carry information on both the local chemistry and electrical potentials. The applications of AP-XPS to oxygen electrocatalysis shown in this Account span well-defined studies of (1) the oxide/oxygen gas interface, (2) the oxide/water vapor interface, and (3) operando measurements of half and full electrochemical cells. Using specially designed model devices, we can expose and isolate the electrode or interface of interest to the incident X-ray beam and AP-XPS analyzer to relate the electrical potentials to the composition/chemical state of the key components and interfaces. We conclude with an outlook on new developments of AP-XPS end stations, which may provide significant improvement in the observation of dynamics over a wide range of time scales, higher spatial resolution, and improved characterization of boundary or interface layers (solid/solid and liquid/solid). Abstract:

Understanding reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface (EEI) is essential to developing strategies to enhance cycle life and safety of lithium batteries. Despite research in the past four decades, there is still limited understanding by what means different components are formed at the EEI and how they influence EEI layer properties. We review findings used to establish the well-known mosaic structure model for the EEI (often referred to as solid electrolyte interphase or SEI) on negative electrodes including lithium, graphite, tin, and silicon. Much less under-standing exists for EEI layers for positive electrodes. High-capacity Li-rich layered oxides yLi2−xMnO3·(1−y)Li1-xMO2, which can generate highly reactive species toward the electrolyte via oxygen anion redox, highlight the critical need to understand reactions with the electrolyte and EEI layers for advanced positive electrodes. Recent advances in in situ characterization of well-defined electrode surfaces can provide mechanistic insights and strategies to tailor EEI layer composition and properties. Continue reading.

Abstract:

Oxides are instrumental to applications such as catalysis, sensing, and wetting, where the reactivity with water can greatly influence their functionalities. We find that the coverage of hydroxyls (*OH) measured at fixed relative humidity trends with the electron-donor (basic) character of wetted perovskite oxide surfaces. Using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we report that the affinity toward hydroxylation, coincident with strong adsorption energies calculated for dissociated water and hydroxyl groups, leads to strong H bonding that is favorable for wetting while detrimental to catalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Our findings provide novel insights into the coupling between wetting and catalytic activity and suggest that catalyst hydrophobicity should be considered in aqueous oxygen electrocatalysis.

New research shows non-wetting surfaces promote chemical reaction rates.
David L. Chandler, MIT News Office
Materials that have good wetting properties, as illustrated on the left, where droplets spread out flat, tend to have hydroxyl groups attached to the surface, which inhibits catalytic activity. Materials that repel water, as shown at right, where droplets form sharp, steep boundaries, are more conducive to catalytic activity, as shown by the reactions among small orange molecules. Abstract:

We examined the electronic structure in LaMO3 perovskite oxides (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) by combining information from X-ray emission, absorption, and photoelectron spectroscopy. Through first-principles density functional theory simulations, we identified complementary hybridization features present in the transition metal and oxygen X-ray emission spectra. We then developed a method for the self-consistent alignment of the emission data onto a common energy scale using these features, providing a valuable supplementary technique to photoelectron spectroscopy for studying the partial density of states in perovskites. Continue reading.

Electronic structure of lanthanide-containing perovskite oxides probed by X-ray absorption, X-ray emission and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Using this data, Hong et al. demonstrated a new method for experimentally determining the partial density of states in perovskite oxides on an absolute energy scale, which opens new possibilities for rationalizing their electrochemical behavior.
