This direction or the invention notebook focused on establishing a theme and a cover design. This concept refinement was targeted for children and envisioned the design process as a journey. As such, the title "The Road to Invention" was used. This led to the iconography and symbols from Highway signs. The ront cover is the view from inside a car on the idea highway. The Idea-o-meter and un levels can be changed through manipulation of the paper dials. The tabs on the side can be rotated. The symbols would be used throughout the book to identify different activities and stops on the idea highway. The journey would be guided by the time the beaver narrator, shown on the back cover. The back cover again shows the content in the book in the form of signage. The blue icons oten used to indicate hotels or food on the highway would be used to indicate different types of activities. In the examples on the back cover, the lightbulb could be used on ideation prompts, the pencil for sketching, and the scissors for construction activities. The intention of this design was to use highway symbols which are easily recognizable in a cartoony way to make the "journey" of the design process more fun. This is also an exploration of a possible unifying theme for the form language in the notebook.
