Giant Electronics: Microchip Backpack/ Laptop Bag |
The final design for the sketch model mirrors that of an eight-pin microchip (# 555 timer IC shown above on the left), and takes the form of a conventional laptop bag (shown on the right) suitable for 15" laptops. |
The final sketch model is shown above in plan view.
It is noted that the shape of a conventional laptop case lends itself well to the microchip motif, since the shape is more square than a typical backpack.
The logo details have not been finalized, and could potentially reflect a variety of MIT themes, or be replaced by a more universally-applicable design to facilitate marketing of the bag to a non-MIT audience. |
Shown above is a side view of the microchip laptop case, highlighting the metallic pins.
The pins have been fabricated using aluminum, but this may be replaced by a softer material in future design iterations, due to considerations of ergonomics. |

Fire Hydrant Cup |
This sketch model stems from the concept sketches shown above on the left and center, where a simple trigger mechanism on the side of the product would allow water to issue from the top.
Shown above and to the right is the basic fire hydrant cup used as a basis for several of HERDD's sketch models. |
The final sketch model is shown above, where a squirt gun was used to provide the pump mechanism necessary to squirt the water out of the top of the fire hydrant.
The trigger is visible on the right hand side of the hydrant bottle, which is simply depressed to pump water out through the yellow nozzle at the top.
(An extra squirt gun is also shown to give an indication of the size of the components used in the hydrant bottle) |
The concept sketch above on the left describes another interpretation of the fire hydrant cup. It is a squeezable water bottle, and mimics the functionality of sports bottle such as that shown to the right. |
A very simple implementation of the squeezable water bottle serves to give a sense of the dimensions of a 750 ml bottle with some design touches that relate to the fire hydrant theme.
It is apparent that the hydrant shape will need to be more elongated than the squirt gun design if this product is to be developed further, so that the final product is sized to fit in bicycle water bottle holders etc. |
