Analysis 2: Viewing Advertisements

 


Survey Results Summary (25 students* and personal experience):

 
 
  1. Views per week:
     
              
     
     
  2. All 25 students do not look at public bulletin boards outside of MIT.
     
  3. All 25 students only look at MIT bulletin boards "because they are there."
     
  4. 13 students thought that bulletin boards are a good advertising method, but only for MIT events. They all commented that MIT bulletin boards could be a lot more efficient.
     
  5. Main dislikes about bulletin boards (comments by 5 or more students):
    • They look bad.
    • They are very disorganized.
    • They are too overwhelming.
    • Outdated information often clutters the board.
    • Non-MIT affiliated ads are annoying.

  6. Main likes about bulletin boards (comments by 5 or more students):
    • They are a good diversion in between classes.
    • They are colorful and art-like.
    • They are easy to access.
    • They do not cost anything.
    • They have a diversity of events.
    • What is there to like?
 
 

I watched people walk by the bulletin board shown below and on the Homepage. It is located in the MIT Student Center. I stood as a distant observer for 5 minutes, and assumed that the majority of people were students. Out of the 108 students that passed by the board:

 
 
  1. 70 glanced at the board for less than 5 seconds.
     
  2. 2 students stopped to read the advertisements as they waited to meet another student.
     
  3. 1 student posted on the board with a stapler. He posted two of the same ads on one board. The majority of the font was between 14 and 18 point. One ad that he covered was a non-MIT affiliated ad, and one was an MIT ad, which expired that evening.
