Program Description
How does this work?
A normal day
This summer, MSBP will provide opportunities for 20-30 young men and women, who demonstrate a passion for baseball and an interest in academic improvement. Every weekday in July, middle school students will arrive to enjoy a morning split between math and science classes. Since the camp takes place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, students gather at the steps of 77 Massachusetts Avenue before 9:00 am. The day begins with a nutritious snack to jump start the brain, and students then attend morning classes in both mathematics and physical sciences. Students are divided into two sections and go to their assigned classes, switching between the two subjects halfway through the morning.
MSBP students rub the nose on George Eastman's bronze plaque in MIT's Building 6 after learning that it is rumored to bring good luck.
At noon, all students rejoin for a lunch provided by MSBP. Accompanied by the program's teachers and coaching/teaching assistants, students have the opportunity to discuss homework (as well as the latest MLB news) freely. Then, everyone takes the field.
Walking out to Briggs Field, the players practice and play on a full-size collegiate field. Putting to practice what they learned in the classroom, the program participants will both practice and play scrimmage games throughout the afternoon. At 4pm, the practice ends and the students reconvene where the day started, in front of MIT's Lobby 7 at 77 Massachusetts Avenue.
