Sarah Fay
Hi! My name is Sarah. I just defended my PhD thesis, which was about 3D printed running shoes! I've also spent the last year intermittently doing research about COVID testing strategies. Extracurricularly, I spend a lot of time with sports. I assistant coach the field hockey team, and I play intramural floor hockey. I spend the rest of my free time cooking, watching silly TV shows, and doing puzzles. I'm from Western Massachusetts, and I did my undergrad at MIT. This will be my 6th summer with WTP. I was a student on the EECS track and have been a residential tutor for ME twice. This will be my third summer as an ME instructor. I'm super excited to spend the summer getting to know all of you (virtually) and showing you the awesome curriculum that the program has to offer!

Alice Nasto
Hello! I’m Alice and I’m super excited to be part of the WTP team this summer! I did my PhD in MechE at MIT, where I studied fluid mechanics with hairy surfaces. My research was inspired by nature, tackling questions such as "How do otters keep their fur dry to stay warm in cold water?" and "Why is it useful for a nectar drinking bat to have a hairy tongue?". This past semester I taught Measurement and Instrumentation, and had loads of fun helping out with Go Forth and Measure projects! I’m also interested in fabrication and design, and love making things- ceramics, furniture, clothes, and even a remote-controlled blimp in the shape of a cat riding a hot dog with tiny 3D printed propellers.

Sandra Walter
Hello! My name is Sandy and I graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering with a Minor in Music in 2020, and an MS in MechE this past June. My research area of interest is how to teach technical subjects such that students are comfortable applying concepts to hands on projects. In addition, I want to better understand how teaching engineering as an empowerment tool can benefit those living in refugee communities. Outside of academics, I am a member of MIT's club gymnastics team, teach for the Edgerton Center's K-12 program, and enjoy playing and listening to music. I also love to travel and experience different cultures. I can't wait to meet you all this summer and explore MechE together!

Residential Tutors

Luisa Apolaya Torres
Hey all! My name is Luisa, and I feel super hype to be one of your tutors for WTP this summer! I just graduated from MIT with a MechE degree specializing in Design, and a minor in Theater. I was born in Peru and grew up in East Los Angeles, and my experiences growing up made community service and accessibility to arts education passions of mine. At MIT, I was part of the Latino Cultural Center exec, a variety of theater, dance, and singing groups., In my free time, I write poetry and learn covers of songs on my ukulele. After WTP, I'll be spending time with my abuelita (grandma) in northern Peru for a bit before moving back to CA and looking for a job in design engineering.

Caroline Boone
Hey! I’m Caroline, and I was originally supposed to graduate this May, but ended up taking a semester off last fall due to pandemic stuff, so I now have one final semester to go. I’m studying Mechanical Engineering with a focus in renewable energy development and sustainable design, and I have a minor in Energy Studies. Outside of classes, I’m a percussionist in the MIT Wind Ensemble, I run a subcommittee of the MIT University Association dedicated to working towards a zero-waste campus, and I work with the MIT Office of Sustainability. I also am super involved in the Terrascope program, and have worked as a student mentor for first-year Terrascope students every year I’ve been here. I love running, baking, push-ups, and tattoos, and annoy my friends by constantly spouting scientific/historical/medical fun facts.

Rihn Hong
Hi folks! My name is Rihn, and funnily enough, I never considered MechE before attending MIT, but now I'm a rising junior studying Mechanical Engineering with a Design concentration (as well as Comparative Media Studies with a lil bit of Brain and Cognitive Sciences). Someday, I hope to captivate people with unexpected installations (think science museum exhibits or funky immersive artwork) or through other interactive products and media. I am part of MIT's Radio Society and the Caving Club, and am a prolific visual artist and maker. I use they/them pronouns, and in my free time, I spin fire (and non-fire), climb ropes, and ferment foods that bring delight to half my housemates and horror to the rest. Excited to meet you and experience together a bit of how enabling and illuminating MechE can be!

Carly Long
Hi! My name is Carly and I am a rising junior studying Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Biomechanics. I'm from Tampa, FL and never really considered mechanical engineering before learning more about it at MIT and taking toy product design! I'm so excited to be a tutor this summer and explore MechE with you all! On campus I'm a member of the varsity women's openweight crew team and an interdisciplinary program called NEET Living Machines which brings students together to work on bioengineering projects. Also while I'm at school I love to try out new recipes, hang out with my sister in Boston, and convince my friends to watch reruns of Survivor with me!

Alessandra Luna
Hi everyone! My name is Alessandra and I’m a recently graduated student (MIT class of 2021) with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a concentration in Medical Device Design. I hope to become a professor in the future because I love teaching and working with students. At MIT, I’ve worked with the Academic Teaching Initiative to tutor high school students in SAT Math, and I’ve also been a Teaching Assistant for introductory “maker” courses (I love teaching hands-on labs and enjoy helping students take a project from a concept in their minds to a product in the real world). In my free time, I love cooking (and eating), playing music, making art (both digitally and on paper), and playing games with friends and family. I am super excited to meet everyone this summer and am ready for some virtual fun!

Hailey Oh
Hi! My name is Hailey and I am a rising senior from NYC, majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Japanese. I have a passion for robotics and currently I am the CEO of MIT Robotics Team. I am especially interested in incorporating robotics into product design, from consumer electronics to medical devices. Last semester I explored the manufacturing side of MechE as a manufacturing intern for Loop Cushion, designed & manufactured 50+ yoyos for 2.008, and helped program a semi-autonomous mobile robot for taking care of seniors in senior care centers as part of my intro to robotics class. Outside of academics, I enjoy playing piano and ukulele, painting/drawing, watching anime, playing LoL, attempting at baking, and finding new places to explore with my friends!

WTP Associate Director & WTP-ME Track Coordinator

Dr. Barbara Hughey is a Senior Lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department and lead instructor for the junior-level 2.671 Measurement and Instrumentation Course. She is a graduate of Princeton University (BSE 1981 in Engineering Physics) and MIT (PhD 1989 in Physics). After receiving her Ph.D she worked in the Boston area developing accelerator-based instruments, primarily for medical applications.
