Monitoring for the Floating Airport
The ultimate goal of the monitoring systems is to decrease impact on the environment, and in this case of the marine ecosystem. Five buoys have been installed in the relative area surrounding the floating airport site and these will continuously check for unusual conditions such as unnatural fluctuations in levels of nitrates. The Participatory Fishing Sector Research and Monitoring Program currently records the amount and type of marine species caught by the local fishermen, and has been collecting data around the Galapagos Islands since 1997. Using this data we can look at the status of certain species, such as migratory fish populations, to make certain that our plans do not negatively affect the marine ecosystem.
