Research Experience
My research experience in the SMA programme has been
intellectually stimulating and fulfilling. My advisors are very accessible, even though one or more of them are usually half the world away. I was able to tap on the technical knowledge and vast experiences of my advisors, ensuring that I pick up the basics of my research domain quickly. They usually have answers to my questions, and if they do not, they always make sure that I got the pointers I needed to continue my work.
The SMA tradition of encouraging its doctoral students to spend time in both NUS and MIT further enriched my research experience. Through the weekly journal clubs, I was able to share my ideas with my peers in the Learning group in MIT and the Medical Decision Making Group in NUS. Having the opportunity to take classes offered in both schools has also expanded the breadth of my knowledge. In NUS, I was able to learn from my student fellows, who came from all around Asia. In MIT, I found research groups with similar interests. In my interactions with fellow researchers, I was able to obtain pointers to relevant research and enlightening feedback on my work.
