Campus Construction

Richard Amster, Director

We manage and implement ground-up building projects on campus as well as major renewals and renovations of MIT’s existing physical assets, often collaborating with the Office of Campus Planning during the design and planning phases. One of our highest priorities is a capital renewal program that identifies critical needs, reduces deferred maintenance, and prioritizes upcoming projects.

Capital Projects

The Capital Projects team manages every aspect of capital project activities— from programming through occupancy—on large-scale construction projects. A portfolio of work is detailed on the Capital Projects website and includes the renovation of Building 2, the development of a graduate residence in Kendall Square, and the construction of MIT.nano, a state-of-the-art facility that will combine the Institute’s nanotechnology, materials, and engineering systems research with the most advanced fabrication and materials processing tools, all under one roof.

Renovations & Renewal

Leading the stewardship of MIT’s physical assets, the R&R team develops and manages a growing portfolio of projects ranging from office renovations to whole building interventions. The team’s robust Capital Renewal program is designed to maximize investment impact by prioritizing projects that advance MIT’s mission and by addressing infrastructure and programmatic needs together.

Systems Performance & Turnover

The mission of the SPT group is to lead MITís commitment toward a high-performance campus by addressing the entire life cycle of our built environment. SPT integrates a whole-building, systems approach into the planning, design, and construction process; drives best practices for operation and efficient performance of existing systems; and leads a quality turnover process that benefits MIT project management and operations teams as well as the users of our buildings.
