Experience
We are different in many respects. Martin is the rocket scientist. Ali is the politician. Martin knows how to snowboard really well. Ali would probably break his neck if he went down the kiddy slopes. You get the picture. The most important point, though, is that while we may bring different skills to the table, our visions for the UA are perfectly aligned. Our record of experience makes us ideally suited to representing you.
Martin Holmes
Martin served as the UA Senator from MacGregor during his freshman and sophomore years. As a member of Senate, he convinced the administration to install a $15,000 Athena cluster in MacGregor. Since taking office as Class of 2008 President last fall, he has continued to build an impressive record of accomplishments.
Exciting Events
Striving to ensure that the budget was spent effectively, he surveyed the class to determine their interests. After receiving feedback, he organized several of the year’s most successful events:
- “300” IMAX Midnight Screening
- Borat
- Sunday River Ski Trip
- Stomp
- Faculty Dinners
- Boston Bruins Hockey Game
- Ice Skating Study Break
- Circus
If you are a junior, you can also look forward to a formal and a Red Sox game.
Improved Communication
Martin held “traveling” Class Council meetings at a new community every week in order to collect better feedback from students. He also issued quarterly newsletters to all juniors and distributed a host of surveys to better gauge student input. If you e-mail him, you will almost always get a response within 24 hours.
Ali Wyne
As a UA Senator from Burton-Conner since his freshman year and as Senate Vice-Chair since sophomore year, Ali has established a strong record of leadership and initiative:
- Organized MIT’s first Study Abroad Fair
- Circulated a petition and co-authored a bill that oppose any moves to replace Burton-Conner’s kitchens with additional dorm rooms
- Expressed strong support for Simmons Hall when it was under review by the Cambridge License Commission
- Helped defeat a proposal that would have imposed steep fines on students who were caught hacking on the rooftops of MIT buildings
- Supported the establishment of new initiatives such as the New York Times Student Newspaper Program and “Brunches / Lunches with Larry,” a program that allows students to express their concerns on campus issues to Larry Benedict, the Dean for Student Life
- Raised thousands of dollars for victims of the Southeast Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina
- Sponsored a resolution to fund honoraria for experts on the situation in Darfur, such as Eric Reeves
Following his passion for politics, he founded the Forum on American Progress his freshman year. Since then, Ali has worked to raise the profile of political discussion at MIT by inviting prominent speakers such as Noam Chomsky and Alan Dershowitz. Perhaps more importantly, he has not hesitated to take a provocative stance on several issues. His group cosponsored the February 22nd forum, “Foreign Policy and Social Justice: A Jewish View, A Muslim View.” Notwithstanding the intense criticism that he received, Ali expressed an unwavering commitment to defending free speech. As your elected representative, he will always take principled stands – even if they are not the most popular ones.
