Projects for, about and by design

From 2008 to 2009, I worked with a group of doctors, engineers and architects from the Universidad de Cayetano Heridia and the Imperial College of London in Lima, Peru. I was part of team that designed and fabricated a Bio-safety level 2 laboratory for testing tuberculosis housed in a shipping container. The goal was to increase access to Tuberculosis testing throughout Peru.

One novel feature of the mobile lab was the removable jacks that were used for unloading the container from a truck without a crane and for leveling the lab on uneven terrain.

My role was mainly to assess the feasibility of the designs before fabrication. I made models of the different mechanisms as well as simulations of the HVAC systems. I also created energy usage analyses for different locations in Peru. The mobile laboratory is currently being used for Tuberculosis tests in Peru.
