Projects for, about and by design

The project I'm currently working on is a children's book on type called "Are you my typeface?" I have a blog detailing the development so far here. I started the book as a gift for one of the children at my daughter's daycare. His parents are architects and type lovers and being interested in type myself I thought it was a good opportunity to further develop my graphic design skills. I wanted to create a book which would allow children and their parents to explore typography together in a fun and interested way. I constructed several prototypes as well as the final gift and learned a lot about making board books in the process.

The book itself is about a little lost "a" that goes looking for its typeface. It goes around asking different typefaces, "Are you my typeface?" and being turned down, before finally meeting its typeface and finding its home. Each typeface is associated with a vignette which is evocative of the typeface in both form and color. The intent is for children to use all of the information (type, color, shape) to match up the lost "a" with its typeface.

I am currently working on getting all the material ready to put the project on kickstarter to do a medium-sized print run. As companion pieces, I have also designed several posters and stickers and am in the process of doing some letterpress broadsides. This project is quite exciting for me as I have been learning about design spaces I had not worked in previously.
