   Teach for America

Our nation faces a great challenge.  Children growing up in low-income communities today are seven times less likely to graduate from college than children in high-income areas.  With fewer educational prospects come fewer life prospects.  We are assembling the nation's most promising leaders to address this injustice.

Teach For America is the national corps that calls upon outstanding and diverse recent college graduates to commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in ensuring that all of our nation's children have an equal chance in life.  As you come into contact with talented students at MIT, you are in t! he unique position to inform and encourage achievement-oriented young people about the impact they can have by joining Teach For America.

While career services is always our primary contact on every campus, our recruitment director, Crystal Brakke, would also like to meet with you in person to talk about how we can best reach the most dedicated leaders on your campus.  Please let me know if you are available to meet on those days, best times, and if so, where you are located on campus.  Please feel free to invite other colleagues to this meeting as well.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

     Regards,
     Laura Stahl

Engineers Wanted

Dear Society Of Women Engineers Student Chapter Officers and Advisors,

As a former president of a student chapter of SWE (University of Miami, FL 1995-1996), I know that your time is precious, so I would like to take just a few minutes to let you know about the
opportunities the Navy has for engineers and in particular, women engineers.

Like engineering careers, the military has been a male dominated career by its nature and the Navy may not be your first thought when you think about your career. but after reading the following you may think again.

Do you like challenge?  Do you want responsibility?  Do you want a guaranteed job paying you the same as your male counterparts?  The first thoughts that come to mind when talking about the "US Navy" are often about ships, submarines and aircraft."  The Navy is so much more than that; eventually those ships, subs and planes need to come home.

The Navy is supported by hundreds of shore facilities worldwide, many of which are like small cities.  In fact, the Navy has a physical plant valued at more than $100 billion.  The Navy Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) has a proud 150-year tradition of providing engineering, design, construction, project management and maintenance services to support and sustain this vast shore-based infrastructure.
The CEC is a professional organization comprised of 1250 men and women, engineers and architects who manage the Navy's worldwide, multi-billion dollar shore and ocean facilities.  CEC officers are naval officers who use their professional training and skills as managers, administrators, and executives in planning, design, construction, and operations and maintenance. The Civil Engineer Corps offers young engineers immediate responsibility, challenging assignments and broad professional growth.  In addition, the CEC Collegiate Program provides up to $1,900 per month to qualified students who are within 36 months of obtaining a bachelor's degree or
within 12 months of obtaining their masters.

My name is Lieutenant Cassie Gorman and I have spent the last 5 years as both an engineer and a Naval Officer in the CEC.  As the school year continues, I am sure that you are making an effort to plan interesting programs for your chapter meetings.  I am available to travel to Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a mutually agreeable date to provide a professional presentation about the Navy Civil Engineer Corps, my experiences as a CEC Officer, and career and scholarship opportunities for Engineering Students.

To schedule a presentation, or to find out more about the CEC and our Collegiate Program, please call me collect at (877) 805-6791 or e-mail me at accessions@efdlant.navfac.navy.mil.

I would also greatly appreciate it if you could forward this e-mail to your students in order to assist us in disseminating this information and the opportunities available to them.  We wish to
reach out to as many students as possible to inform them of our program.

Please see the attached document for highlights on the Scholarship Programs (also available at www.bupers.navy.mil/navycec

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Cassie A. Gorman
Lieutenant,
Civil Engineer Corps,
United States Navy
