Awards by the MIT Women's
League
Laya W.
Weisner Award & Laya Weisner Community Award
Deadline: April 2
These awards were established by the
MIT Women's League to honor MIT's former first lady will be given this
year at the Awards Convocation on Monday, May 14, at 4pm in Room 10-250.
An ardent supporter of women and of the League, Laya strove to make MIT
a place where individual contributions that improved the Institute's quality
of life were valued by all.
The Laya Weisner Award is given annually
to the undergraduate woman who has most enhanced community life. Twenty
young women have now been recipients of this award. With the death of Laya
Weisner in 1998, the Women's League lost a devoted member. As a memorial
to her legacy, they established the Laya Weisner Community Award in 1999
to be given to "a member or friend of the MIT community for conspicuously
effective service that reflects Laya's concerns for enhancing life at the
institute and in the world at large." The award was given for the first
time last year.
The MIT Women's League is now soliciting
nominations for both awards, each of which carries a financial prize of
$1000. Nominations for the awards, in a brief letter describing the candidate's
qualifications, should be sent to Sis de Bordenave, Rm 10-342, by
Monday, April 2. For further information, please call 253-3656.

Hydro Power Contest.
There will be more than $30,000 in
scholarships and prizes for the winners for Region F SWE Student Sections.
Many hydroelectric generation managers,
designers, consultants, and scientists are approaching retirement.
Industry leaders are opening many new jobs for entry level professionals.
A wide variety of opportunities are opening up such as, environmental science,
business administration, management, legal, corporate communications, and
media relations as well as the more traditional civil, mechanical, electrical,
and electronic engineering.
In order to introduce them to the hydro
industry, one organization is inviting students to attend this year's technical
conference and trade show in Salt Lake City. Students are being offered
full-conference registration for $25, which is about 4% of the normal registration
fee! This may be the lowest-cost opportunity to launch a career search
which could be found. The conference, WATERPOWER XII, is one of the
leading sponsors of the Hydro Power Contest. Please check out the
conference web site at:
http://www.hcipub.com/wp/index.asp
Let me also remind you of the scholarship
and prize opportunities
available through the Hydro Power
Contest. Please check out the Contest web site for information or
print the attached PDF file to get started.
