Transplanting

The whips will be transplanted out into the surrounding Mill Creek neighborhood as they grow hardy and more well adapted to the harsh urban environment. This transplanting will occur on a rotating basis, every 3 to 4 years. The partners of the nursery (the Sulzberger students) will designate the destination of these trees, as they see fit. The trees will emanate out into the area in 'arcs', a signature of the Waves Nursery.

The trees will be transplanted 'bareroot' (as seen above). The tree pits will be dug wider and deep enough for the root mass to lie in. The soil piled back over the base of the transplanted tree will be slightly mounded, to allow for proper drainage. This technique will allow for less loss in root mass, which will be essential to the successful growth of the young tree in its less hospitable setting, on the street or in vacant lots, etc. Such care will give the young trees a better chance at surviving outside of the nursery.
