Giant Electronics: Resistor Sunglasses Case

Shown above (top) is an image of a real resistor, the shape and color of which has inspired the Photoshop rendering of the sunglasses case below it.

Shown above are four examples of Solidworks form variations for the the resistor shape. The leftmost is the simplest, consisting of two spheres attached to a cylindrical shaft.

The second and third forms continue the development of a shape that captures the basic structure and proportions of a resistor, but are deemed to include unnecessary details with the end "nubs" to represent the start of the protruding wires.

The fourth form variation is that which is developed further.

Shown above is a rendering of a transparent polymer case.

It is intended that if this product is mass-produced, that injection-molding of the case in a single piece will be possible. The design allows for a single-piece construction through the use of a live hinge, and an interference fitting to clasp the case shut around a keyed mating surface.

Note that the details of these features can be examined in the engineering drawings supplied below (click image for .pdf)

Shown above is a rendering showing how the case will look with resistor bands that represent 150 ohms (to relate to the MIT150 celebration).
