Functional Neuroimaging: Opportunities and Challenges

Over the past decade, functional neuroimaging has emerged as an important interdisciplinary research area. This has been in particular promoted by the development of functional MRI and the significant advancement in electrophysiological neuroimaging using EEG/MEG. We will review the advancement in electrophysiological neuroimaging integrating EEG with structure MRI. We will also review the investigation of co-localization of hemodynamic and electrophysiological signals associated with motor imagery using BOLD fMRI and electrophysiological neuroimaging. Dr. Bin He is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Director of Center for Neuroengineering and Director of NIH Training Program in Neuroimaging. Dr. He's major research interests include neuroengineering, functional biomedical imaging, and bioelectromagnetism. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals and delivered over 150 plenary, keynote, and invited talks at various international conferences and institutions. He serves as an associate editor of multiple international journals including IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering. Dr. He was the recipient of NSF CAREER Award, American Heart Association Established Investigator Award, and is a Fellow of IEEE and American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. He is a Past President of the International Society of Bioelectromagnetism and a Past President of the International Society for Functional Source Imaging. Dr. He is the 2009-2010 President of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society.

Padma Lakshmi
The model and celebrity host of Top Chef, is visiting MIT in an event co-sponsored by BE-BMES. Her visit marks the launch of the MIT Center for Gynepathology Research.

Ms. Lakshmi is visiting to raise awareness of the toll endometriosis takes on society, including members of the MIT community. Her seminar is free and open to the public. In recent years, the advantages of using small invertebrate animals as model systems for human diseases have become increasingly apparent and have resulted in three Nobel Prizes. However, high-throughput in vivo studies of animal models could not previously be performed at sub-cellular resolution. We present key technologies for complex high-throughput whole-animal genetic and drug discoveries at sub-cellular resolution. Using femtosecond laser microsurgery techniques, we performed in vivo neuronal regeneration screens on tens of thousands of animals and identified compounds and genetic targets that enhance regeneration dramatically following injury.

Prof. Yanik received his BS and MS at MIT Engineering in 2000, and PhD at Stanford Physics in 2006 as a Fellow. He completed short postdoctoral work in Stanford Bioengineering and Neurosurgery. He is currently serving as faculty at MIT’s Department of Engineering. His work on femtosecond optics, microfluidics, neuronal regeneration, coherent photonics is recognized by NIH Director’s Innovator Award, Packard Award in Engineering, Alfred Sloan Award in Neuroscience, NIH Eureka (Exceptional Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration) Award, Shillman Career Award, NSF Career Award, Innovator's Challenge Award of Silicon Valley, Technology Review Magazine’s “World’s top 35 innovators under age 35”, Junior Chamber International’s “Outstanding Young Person", and Technology Research News Magazine’s “Top ten advances of the year”.
