Join Top Chef's Padma Lakshmi at MIT on Dec. 4!

Padma Lakshmi, the model and celebrity host of Top Chef, is visiting MIT in an event co-sponsored by BE-BMES.  Her visit marks the launch of the MIT Center for Gynepathology Research.  Join us on Dec. 4 at 4 pm in 32-123 to hear her speak about: "The Pain Within: My struggle with and triumph over Endometriosis".  Ms. Lakshmi is visiting to raise awareness of the toll endometriosis takes on society, including members of the MIT community.  Her seminar is free and open to the public.  To learn more about Padma Lakshmi's visit and apply to attend a private reception with her following her seminar, visit the Center for Gynepathology Research website.

This event is focused on pre-medical advising and a discussion of the clinical practice and research interface. We will begin at 7:00pm with a networking dinner followed by welcoming remarks. Dr. Richard Lee will give a seminar titled "Regenerating Heart Cells". Dr. Lee will then open up the floor to discussion and questions.

With the rapid growth of opportunities at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and life sciences, freshmen interested in "bioengineering" often have many questions about the differences and similarities among undergraduate programs in Courses 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 20, and 22. Come get the inside scoop and get your questions answered. This event is co-sponsored with the BE Undergrad Student Board and designed for Freshmen with questions about which major to declare by April 17 (or how to plan to sample a couple in the fall and stay on track). Regardless of what major you choose, BE-BMES is a society that keeps MIT students connected to professional opportunities at the Biology/Medicine/Engineering interface.

Dr Isaacson is currently President of the Society for Reproductive Surgeons, and is a co-founder of the MGH-based CIMIT (Center for Integrative Medicine and Innovative Technologies), a consortium of Boston teaching hospitals and engineering schools. CIMIT fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among experts in medicine, science, and engineering, in concert with industry and government, to improve patient care.

Dr Isaacson has collaborated with many MIT engineers  (in Courses 2, 6, 10, and 20) to improve surgical methods and patient care, and to investigate basic mechanisms of chronic disease. Dr Isaacson will provide highlights from his current practice and provide perspective on career paths in medicine.  Collaborators from Course 6 (Prof. John Guttag) and Course 20 (Prof. Linda Griffith) will join the discussion to provide perspective on how PhDs participate in addressing clinical problems.

Format: Presentation starts at 7:30 with Q & A from students following.  Discussion about medical career paths is especially encouraged.
