Atlantis II Core Sampling

In order to gather a thorough understanding of the geological history of deposits in the Edmund vent system, we plan to run shallow core samples (10m depth) in the sediment plain. These tests will provide substantial data about how each part of the vent field and plain formed up until modern times.

Procedure

  • Identify semi-regular randomized positions in geological areas of interest
  • Using a 10m core sampler on AUVs and transportation vehicles collect core samples, plugging holes with an environmentally safe plugging compound
  • Perform x-ray diffraction on cores to identify marine minerals and clays
  • Core logging
  • Textural analysis with laser probe
  • Grain size analyses using a settling column
  • Test for particle size, shape, and porosity
  • X-ray core photography
  • Send cores to surface for any additional testing needed
