Cost: Payment Center
A centralized application would allow for more ways to get discounts and track spending and make payments easier. Users could load money on the app or connect their credit cards to it and then scan their phones to pay. They could also track their spending with the app and see if it would make financial sense to buy the weekly and monthly passes. Further research showed MBTA is already planning to implement this improvement with their automated fare collection 2.0 project (AFC2). AFC2 is planned to be completed by 2021 and will allow riders to tap to board with a fare card, smartphone, or contactless credit card, and will allow for online account management. AFC2 could be seamlessly integrated into a centralized MBTA app.
