Sugarcane
Charcoal
During D-lab
2002-2003, members of the class were working on developing ways
to transform waste into briquettes suitable for cooking purposes.
After several failures, they discovered that the best approach was
to transform the waste into charcoal. The bulk of the effort for
the D-lab team was then targeted at developing a means by which
to transform sugarcane waste, or bagasse, into cooking charcoal.
In Haiti, the sugarcane charcoal project may help to alleviate several
problems, including a lack of solid fuel sources (Haiti is 98% deforested)
and the health problems associated with inhaling smoke from wood
fires. This past year, members of the India group in D-lab 2003-2004
have worked at adapting the process for use with paddy straw, which
is similar to hay, and they too have been largely successful (after,
of course, the requisite failures).
