Chairman's Message
Chairman Chairman Quoates

The year past is yet another successful year for the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA). The Alliance has continued to offer transformative education to nurture students who are globally relevant and effective.

The longstanding partnership between NUS, NTU and MIT, now in its twelfth year, continues to attract the region’s best. In turn, SMA has produced graduates and added to the talent pool in industry and research. The teams formed by the Alliance universities for the Flagship Research Projects as well as the Inter-University Projects, for example, deepen knowledge sharing and enhanced capabilities. Students not only benefit from a top-notch education, but are also enriched by the cultural exchanges during their stint at MIT.

Over the year SMA has built relationships with its alumni to create a talent network that better connects graduates with SMA and with one another. I am pleased to note this year that the SMA Alumni Fund has been pooled by all the three Alliance universities for the next five years to support meaningful activities and networking opportunities. This will help SMA graduates benefit from their distinctive SMA experience and their shared heritage.

I am also pleased to note that SMA faculty members continue to contribute to the industry as responsible corporate citizens. The Manufacturing Excellence Awards (MAXA), have since 2006 benefitted from the manufacturing and technology expertise of SMA faculty during the assessment rounds.

The strong linkages forged with MIT through the SMA have helped to pave the way for more collaborative ventures, such as the set up of the new Singapore University of Technology and Design.

I am confident that SMA will continue to chart meaningful paths in global collaborative research and education.
