Stewards of the Campus

The MIT Department of Facilities creates, cares for, and powers MIT’s physical environment. As stewards of the campus, we build and maintain its structures and grounds, manage its security, and provide the utilities and services necessary to advance the educational and research activities of the Institute. The goal of our more than 600 employees is to provide a safe, well-functioning, and welcoming campus for the people who visit, study, work, and live within the MIT community.

Our teams are organized under three primary groups within the Department: Campus Construction, Campus Services, and Maintenance and Utilities.

Campus Construction

Richard Amster, Director

Campus Construction manages the construction, renovation, and renewal of buildings on the MIT Cambridge campus, tailoring our work to the needs of our faculty, students, and staff. In consultation with academic and administrative leaders, Campus construction identifies goals and manages projects ranging from complete new buildings and major renewals of existing buildings to redesigns and renovations of labs, departments, and other complex spaces. The team is currently overseeing a capital renewal effort that will improve the physical campus for years to come.

Campus Services

John DiFava, Director

In addition to providing a gateway to Facilities’ services though the Customer Service Center, Campus Services also provides parking and mail services, undertakes landscaping and other grounds improvements, maintains campus safety, and manages campus recycling efforts.

Maintenance and Utilities

Donald Holmes, Director

At the front line of campus stewardship, Maintenance and Utilities keeps MIT running by engineering, repairing, maintaining, and enhancing its structures, mechanical systems, and energy resources, including the Central Utilities Plant.

The administrative teams that support the work of the department include; Communications; Environment, Health & Safety; Facilities Information Technology & Services, which includes the Applications & Desktop Services and Business Systems teams; Finance & Accounting; Human Resources; and Vendor Management.
