Facilities Staff Provide Exceptional Service

As stewards of the campus, it is our duty to preserve and protect MIT’s physical assets. It’s also our goal to provide outstanding service to our customers. With over 600 employees working on many types of projects, there’s a lot going on every day.

On these pages you can learn about our areas and what their roles and responsibilities are. The three primary areas reporting to our two directors are: Operations, Security, and Utilities; Campus Engineering and Construction; and Administration.

Operations is the largest group in our Department and reports to John DiFava. Also reporting to John are the Security and Emergency Management Office and Utilities, which includes the Central Utilities Plant. The Operational areas include Custodial Services, the Customer Service Center, Grounds Services, Mail Services, Recycling, and Repair and Maintenance. Within Repair and Maintenance are the Comprehensive Stewardship Group and the Operations Center. The Operations Center monitors the Institute’s life safety and mechanical systems and alerts our response teams when emergencies arise.

Campus Engineering and Construction (CEC) staff report to Dick Amster and work on planning initiatives including the MIT2030 framework, construction projects ranging from major new buildings to lab renovations. The team is currently responsible for a capital renewal effort that will improve campus facilities for years to come.

Our administrative areas support the work of Operations and CEC. They include: Applications & Desktop Services, Communications, Environment, Health & Safety, Finance & Accounting, and HR & Labor Relations.

Our staff members are making MIT work today and are preparing a sustainable learning environment for future generations.
