CUP upgrade project

The cogeneration process at MITís Central Utilities Plant (CUP) was originally anchored by a single natural gas turbine that went into operation in 1995. As the turbine neared the end of its useful life, MIT recognized a valuable opportunity to upgrade and enhance its on-campus power system. Initiated in 2019 and completed in 2021, the CUP Upgrade Project replaced the plantís original turbine, added a second turbine, and completed additional upgrades to create a system capable of serving the campus at least until 2040.

Currently in operation, the upgraded plant is expected to increase power capacity, improve campus resiliency, build campus sustainability, and reduce emissions.
