Frequently
Asked Questions Q:
What is this opportunity?
A: Rising
seniors planning to enroll in an MIT graduate program (though not necessarily
accepted yet), are eligible to move to graduate housing for their senior
year (at undergraduate rates) and then are guaranteed one year of graduate
housing (at graduate rates) immediately following their senior year. Q:
Who is eligible?
A: Juniors who are currently living in on-campus undergraduate
housing and who will be seniors in the Fall 2007, are the only students who are eligible.
Q:
Why aren't off-campus juniors, such as those living in FSILGs, eligible?
A: This program is being created in order to help alleviate
crowding in undergraduate housing. Unfortunately,
putting students who are currently living off-campus in graduate housing
will not help de-crowd our undergraduate buildings.
Q:
How do I apply?
A: To apply, fill out the Senior
Segue application.
Q:Do I still need to fill out a Confirmation Form if I am applying to Senior Segue?
A:Yes, you do still need to fill out the Housing Confirmation Form <http://web.mit.edu/housing/undergrad/confirm.html> and confirm your housing for the building that you currently reside in. If you are not placed in Senior Segue, you will default back into your current building for the Fall, unless you wish to cancel your housing, in which case, you can indicate cancellation on the Confirmation Form.
Q: Is there an advantage to indicating a preference for Ashdown or for a Sidney-Pacific Quad?
A: Yes. The rooms in Ashdown and the Quads in Sidney-Pacific are shared bedrooms. For many people this is a drawback. However, the rates for these rooms are lower than those for the single occupancy rooms, and your chances of getting assigned to the building are much better. Q: Is a reassignment binding?
A: Yes! The decision is absolutely binding. If you apply, and are reassigned in the lottery, you must move. Q:
By when do I need to apply?
A: You need to sign up by April 11, 2007. You will not have the
opportunity to sign up for this program after that date.
Q:
Why shouldn't we just wait until next year to apply for graduate housing?
A: You have to make the best decision for you. It is important to
keep in mind though that the graduate housing process, while seeking to
provide housing to all graduate students, recongizes that Boston has a
difficult housing market which is much harder if you are new to the area. It is for this reason that a portion of graduate housing is set aside for "new" graduate students.
MIT undergraduates that stay for graduate study are not considered "new"
graduate students but "continuing" graduate students by the lottery since
they are not new to the area and often have the advantage of networks
of friends, etc. In last year's graduate student lottery, approximately
50% of "continuing" graduate students that applied to the lottery received
housing. Being guaranteed housing for your first year of graduate study,
particularly if you think you might only stay for one-year, is a significant
advantage of the Senior Segue program.
Q:
To which graduate buildings am I eligible to move?
A: The graduate buildings participating are: Ashdown,
The Warehouse (NW30) (available
academic year only, limited summer housing available), Sidney
& Pacific, and Tang.
Q:
How will rooms be assigned?
A: Room assignments will be made through a combination of direct
assignments via the Graduate Housing Office and the Room Assignment Chairs.
- The Warehouse (NW30)
and Tang will be assigned by Graduate Housing.
- Sidney
& Pacific and Ashdown will be assigned by their respective room
assignment chairs.
Q:
What if I don't know if I am accepted to a graduate program yet (or even
if I'm not completely sure I will be applying)?
A: You do not need to know if you are accepted to a graduate
program in order to apply. You are eligible to apply even if you are just
considering staying on at MIT for a graduate degree.
Q:
What if I am not accepted to a graduate program and am already signed
up for a graduate dorm?
A: You will then live in the graduate building you have been
reassigned to for your senior year and will move out when you graduate
as if you were living in an undergraduate building. Q:
Can I move out mid-year if I don't like it and move back to an undergraduate
building?
A: No. If you move to a graduate building, you will not be
able to move back into an undergraduate building. Keep in mind that our
experience in the past with housing upperclass students in graduate buildings
is that it is well-liked by those who have participated.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: While you are an undergraduate, you will pay an undergraduate rate of $TBD/semester for single occupancy rooms (the same rent being charged for many of the undergradute buildings for next year). The rate for double occupancy rooms (doubles in Ashdown, and Quads in Sidney-Pacific) will be listed on the rates page. As a graduate student you will pay the graduate monthly rent per your license agreement with the Graduate Housing Office.
During your senior year, you will pay either: Ashdown double $2507, S& P 2 bedroom $3319, S & P quad $2781, Tang $2984/semester or the actual rate of the room you are assigned to, whichever is less. The Senior Segue rent is the same rent being charged for many of the undergraduate buildings for next year. The rates for each available room-type is listed on the rates http://web.mit.edu/housing/undergrad/rates.html#seniorsegue page. As a graduate student you will pay the graduate monthly rent per your license agreement with the Graduate Housing Office.
Q. What about summers?
A. You are responsible for the rent for your assignment for the summer between your Senior and Graduate year, unless you graduate and leave MIT Housing. Then you may terminate your assignment per Graduate Housing's termination policies [http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/ghg/gettingout.html]. You are also responsible for the summer at the end of your second year, again, unless you meet the qualifications [http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/ghg/gettingout.html] to terminate your assignment early.
